Tottenham Hotspur coach Ryan Mason is reportedly set to stay on under Ange Postecoglou as part of the Australian's backroom staff.

The 31-year-old has already enjoyed two spells as interim head coach during his fledgling managerial career, taking over for the second time in April following the sacking of Cristian Stellini.

Mason only won two of his six games in the hotseat, though, masterminding a 1-0 success over Crystal Palace before his side relegated Leeds United with a 4-1 final-day thumping.

The Englishman's second tenure began with a hard-fought 2-2 draw with Manchester United, but Spurs were also defeated by Liverpool, Aston Villa and Brentford under his watch and failed to qualify for Europe for the first time in 14 years.

During his time as acting head coach, Mason expressed an interest in taking the reins on a permanent basis, but Spurs chairman Daniel Levy instead chose to bring in experience in the form of Postecoglou.

Mason's future was left in limbo as a result, but according to the Evening Standard, the former Tottenham midfielder has impressed Postecoglou and will continue in a backroom role.

The report adds that at least two teams from the Championship and two other teams across Europe would have been interested in discussing the manager's job with Mason, but he held positive talks with Postecoglou earlier this week.

The 57-year-old subsequently offered Mason a job, which he accepted, and Postecoglou is now said to be pushing to bring John Kennedy - his right-hand man at Celtic - down to North London with him.

Mason had reverted to a technical coaching role under Antonio Conte after taking his first foray into management during the latter stages of the 2020-21 season following the sacking of Jose Mourinho.

The 31-year-old oversaw seven games between April 2021 and June 2021, including the EFL Cup final, which Spurs lost 1-0 to Manchester City in what was his second game in charge.

Mason earned another brief promotion to assistant head coach when Stellini replaced Conte at the end of March, but the Italian lasted just 29 days in the job and was given the boot after a harrowing 6-1 loss to Newcastle United.

After suffering a skull fracture while playing for Hull City in 2017, Mason retired on the advice of doctors over a year later and began working with Tottenham's youth teams to gain coaching experience.

The Englishman will soon be working under the wing of Postecoglou, who arrived on a four-year deal after a highly successful two seasons with Celtic, during which he won a domestic treble in the 2022-23 campaign.

Tottenham moved for Levy after failing to acquire several of their other top managerial targets, namely Julian Nagelsmann, Arne Slot, Vincent Kompany, Xabi Alonso and Luis Enrique.

Nevertheless, Postecoglou has vowed to "leave no stone unturned" as he bids to steer Tottenham back into the European places at the first time of asking next season. body check tags ::
