Atletico Madrid edge out Tottenham Hotspur in International Champions Cup

Diego Godin scores the only goal of the game as Atletico Madrid beat Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 in their International Champions Cup game in Melbourne.

Tottenham Hotspur have made it two defeats from two International Champions Cup games by falling to a 1-0 loss at the hands of Atletico Madrid at the MCG this afternoon.

Spurs hit the woodwork twice in Melbourne, but ultimately a Diego Godin strike late in the first half proved to be the difference Down Under.

It was the Premier League side who had the better of things for much of the first half, though, and summer signing Vincent Janssen almost set up an opening goal after just seven minutes, only for Jan Oblak to turn Christian Eriksen's strike over the crossbar.

The woodwork itself came to Atletico's aid shortly afterwards when Joshua Onomah latched on to a corner following a marauding run by DeAndre Yedlin, smashing his effort against the bar.

Oblak's goal was beginning to live a charmed life, and that was the case again midway through the opening period when Erik Lamela exchanged passes with Janssen before firing a shot against the post.

Atletico took the lead against the run of play five minutes before the interval, though, as Anton Walkes could only glance a header from a free kick onto the back post, where Godin was waiting to poke it past Michel Vorm.

The Champions League finalists went into the break with an undeserved lead, and they were on the back foot again in the second half when Janssen and Son Heung-Min combined to set up Ryan Mason, who saw his half-volley saved by Oblak.

Oblak was called upon again just two minutes later when Spurs were awarded a free kick just outside the box, getting across well to deny Janssen his first goal for the club.

Atletico threatened a second with 15 minutes remaining when they too were awarded a free kick in a good position, but Saul Niguez curled his effort narrowly over the crossbar.

That proved to be the last clear sight of goal as Diego Simeone got the better of compatriot Mauricio Pochettino - both of whom have been linked with the Argentina job - to make it two wins from two in pre-season for the Spanish side.
