Tottenham Hotspur kick off their pre-season tour of the United States with a comfortable 4-1 win over Roma in San Diego.

Fernando Llorente and Lucas Moura scored two goals apiece as Tottenham Hotspur thrashed Roma 4-1 in their International Champions Cup opener in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The Lilywhites started their pre-season campaign in style, netting four times before half time after falling behind to an early Patrik Schick strike.

Despite being without nine of their World Cup participants, Tottenham turned on the style at the SDCCU Stadium in San Diego to put themselves in a strong position in the prestige friendly competition.

The day got off to a bad start for Mauricio Pochettino's men as Schick turned in the area and slotted the ball into the far corner to give Roma the lead.

Spurs responded quickly, though, with Llorente - one of those reportedly on their way out of North London in the next fortnight - rising highest to meet Luke Amos's deflected cross.

A well-worked corner then found Lucas, whose shot was parried into the path of Llorente to put Tottenham in front for the first time.

Lucas got in front of his marker to head in Serge Aurier's cross for goal number four of the first half, before the Brazilian winger drilled the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the box to complete the scoring.

Seventeen changes in the second half did not help with the flow of things, and it took until 15 minutes from time for the next serious attempt.

Paulo Gazzaniga, one of those to come on just after the hour mark, tipped Edin Dzeko's shot around the post to ensure that the Premier League side retained their three-goal margin of victory.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR: Vorm (Gazzaniga 63'), Aurier, Carter-Vickers (Georgiou 83'), Davies, Walker-Peters, Amos (Marsh 84'), Sissoko, Eriksen (Skipp 83'), Lamela (Sanchez 77'), Lucas (N'Koudou 82'), Llorente (Son 63')

ROMA: Mirante (Fuzato 83'), Lucas Pellegrini (Bianda 72'), Manolas (De Rossi 59'), Juan Jesus (Marcano 58'), Santon (Florenzi 83'), Cristante (Coric 59'), Pastore (Strootman 59'), Gonalons, Under (Kluivert 52'), Perotti (Lorenzo Pellegrini 58'), Schick (Dzeko 58')
