Tottenham Hotspur have announced that Bryan Gil has signed for Girona on a season-long loan deal.
Gil has spent the last three years contracted to the Premier League outfit without ever establishing himself as a regular pick in the team.
Just four of his 24 appearances in England's top flight have come from the starting lineup, with a further 10 being made in other competitions.
However, in between being regarded as a squad player at the North Londoners, the 23-year-old has spent loan stints back in Spain with Valencia and Sevilla.
Each of those were far more productive, particularly at the latter with Gil winning the Europa League with his former club during the second half of the 2022-23 campaign.
Nevertheless, the playmaker could not carry that form back to Spurs when handed the chance to remain in Ange Postecoglou's first-team squad.
Gil takes on new challenge at Girona
There have been reports regarding a transfer to Girona for a number of days with Gil not part of the squad for the pre-season tour of Asia.
In a brief social media post and similar article on their official website, Spurs confirmed that Gil had been allowed to make the switch back to his homeland.
Shrewd business from Girona?
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Girona will have the option to turn the loan into a permanent deal for a fee of €15m (£12.6m).
With Spurs having paid £21.6m for Gil's signature, it is a significant drop off in price, yet the former Spain Under-21 international has done little to justify his price-tag.
Gil has remarkably scored only two goals across the last three seasons, both of which came during his loan stint with Sevilla. He has also provided just five assists.
Furthermore, Gil has just eight goals and seven assists from 84 La Liga appearances to his name, a return that will not fill Girona's fans with optimism.
That said, the Champions League qualifiers will feel that they can help Gil fulfil his potential at a time when they have money to spend and spaces in their squad courtesy of a number of high-profile departures. body check tags ::
