Stoke City scored a vital away goal as they beat Swiss side FC Thun 1-0 in the first leg of their Europa League qualifying tie.
Danny Pugh claimed the goal on 20 minutes when he hit home from the edge of the area.
Having used all of their substitutes, outfield player Nicolas Schindelholz went in goal for Thun after keeper David da Costa was sent off for bringing down Jonathan Walters, but the Potters failed to extend their lead.
The return leg at the Britannia Stadium takes place next Thursday.
