Valencia have beaten Stoke City 1-0 in the first leg of their Europa League knockout tie at the Britannia Stadium.
Following a strong start from the hosts Jonathan Walters dragged his shot wide, before Matthew Etherington's effort was punched away.
Valencia could have taken the lead after 20 minutes, but Jonas's drive was saved by Asir Begovic after some clever work from the striker to make space.
The Spaniards eventually took the lead in sensational style as Mehmet Topal lashed in an unstoppable shot from 35 yards.
Etherington looked to be Stoke's main threat after the interval as a number of his crosses caused confusion in the Valencia defence.
However, the away side could have extended their lead when Sofiane Feghouli's shot hit the post.
Despite the let-off for Stoke, they were unable to salvage something for next week's return leg.
