Sunderland manager Gus Poyet has urged Jozy Altidore to produce a response after he left the American forward out of the Capital One Cup final squad.
Altidore's poor run of form saw him omitted from the squad which lost to Manchester City at Wembley, but Poyet claims that the 24-year-old can prove him wrong in the FA Cup quarter-final against Hull City on Sunday.
"It is up to Jozy," the Black Cats manager told reporters. "He should take his frustrations out on the pitch.
"It wasn't easy leaving him out last week so let's see how he reacts.
"He should be saying to himself that he deserved to play and then do well enough to keep his place.
"It all depends on how he performs. I'd like him to prove me wrong."
Altidore has scored just twice for Sunderland this season.
