Dick Advocaat remains coy on future after keeping Sunderland up

Sunderland manager Dick Advocaat praises his "great" defence for producing a solid display during this evening's stalemate away at Arsenal.

Dick Advocaat has admitted that he is on a real high after helping to keep Sunderland in the Premier League, but insists that any decision over his future can wait until next week.

The Black Cats retained their top-flight status by holding Arsenal to a 0-0 draw at the Emirates Stadium this evening, with a solid defensive performance keeping the Gunners at bay.

Experienced boss Advocaat was brought in earlier this year to help transform Sunderland's fortunes, and having done exactly that he has now been tipped to take over on a more permanent basis.

However, the Dutchman has constantly refused to answer questions over his future plans - a stance he continued to take upon full time in North London.

"Arsenal had the possession but you know if you keep trying you get your chances," an visibly emotional Advocaat told Sky Sports News. "In the second half we had chances and we had to score.

"Arsenal were the better side but the organisation was unbelievably good. The emotion was so high. We only lost one in the last six and that is why they deserve to stay in.

"Our defence was great. An unbelievable feeling we did it by ourselves. The players gave everything to stay up. It is a beautiful stadium, facilities are great, but last couple of years not always lucky with things we have done. The players started believing. I will give an answer next week on my future."

The battle to avoid the one remaining relegation place will now be contested between Newcastle United and Hull City on the final day.
