Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe has revealed that he is feeling 'sharp' after scoring twice against former club Toronto in pre-season.
The 32-year-old made the difference on Thursday as the Black Cats beat the Canadians 2-1 at BMO Field.
Having scored his first goals of the summer, Defoe is confident that Sunderland are heading in the right direction.
"I feel like I needed the pre-season," he told the Sunderland Echo. "Today was the sharpest I felt in a long time. It's still a case of getting our fitness up. But at the same time, you want to be sharp, score goals and win the games.
"We've got a couple of weeks until the season starts and we've got two more pre-season games. By the time the season starts, hopefully we'll be ready."
Defoe scored four goals in 19 appearances for Sunderland last season after arriving at the club in January.
