Sunderland manager Martin O'Neill has said that he is staying positive as he waits for news on Wes Brown's knee injury.
The 32-year-old damaged his knee in the Black Cats' friendly against FC Gronigen last weekend.
O'Neill is waiting for the result of a series of scans being conducted on Thursday.
The Mackems boss said: "He will be assessed today. He is doing some scans and I'm hoping that the news is going to be okay. But his knee is really swollen."
Brown faces a race against time to be fit for Sunderland's Premier League opener against Arsenal on August 18.
