John O'Shea urges Sunderland to stand by Gus Poyet

Sunderland defender John O'Shea believes that the club should stand by Gus Poyet after the side's late run to secure Premier League survival for another year.

Sunderland defender John O'Shea has urged the club's board to stand by manager Gus Poyet following their miraculous escape from relegation this season.

The Black Cats looked almost certain for the drop to the Championship by March, although they soon went on an impressive run that has secured their safety ahead of the last game of the season.

O'Shea, who has worked under four different managers at the Stadium of Light since 2011, now feels that the best decision for the club would be to stick with the Uruguayan, who he believes is a "young, hungry manager".

"You can't keep changing your managers," O'Shea told the Daily Star. "Gus is a young, hungry manager who's learnt his trade. He's been a No 2 along the way who has taken a step up and done very well.

"He has good ideas that he sticks to when he could easily have abandoned them but he's stuck to his guns. He's very controlled and passionate as well, which is the South American coming through.

"It's fairly clear we should stick with the current manager. And if it can be less volatile next year than it was this season, that will definitely help."

Sunderland sit in 14th place in the Premier League table ahead of the final game of the season.
