Jack Rodwell believes that claiming bragging rights against Newcastle United in next month's Wear-Tyne derby will help put a "special shine" on Sunderland's faltering season.
The Black Cats have struggled in the Premier League this term, winning just four games to find themselves in real danger of facing the drop.
One of those victories came against arch-rivals Newcastle at St James' Park back in December, and Rodwell claims that a similar result will prove to be much more than just three points in his side's fight for survival.
"[A win] would be massive. It's like a double win really, the derby," he told The Shields Gazette. "The three points is the most important thing now, but if we can win that derby, it would just put a special shine on the season, with two derby victories.
"Like I said, the most important thing is staying up and getting as many points as possible, but I think all the focus now is on this game. Everyone is buzzing."
Sunderland are currently one point and one place above the relegation zone, with eight games of the season left to play.
