Sunderland chairman Ellis Short is reportedly prepared to delay the appointment of a new manager in order to ensure that he gets the right man.
The North-East outfit have been considering their options following the dismissal of Paolo Di Canio just five games into the Premier League season.
Former Brighton & Hove Albion boss Gus Poyet is said to be the favourite for the position following his public claims that he wants the job at the Stadium of Light.
While the Black Cats are considering appointing Poyet, Short may wait to make a final decision towards the middle of next week, according to The Journal.
Reports have claimed that Sunderland are also interested in speaking to former Manchester United first-team coach Rene Meulensteen.
Sunderland will head into Sunday's league clash against Liverpool with Kevin Ball in charge.
