Sunderland have confirmed that Kevin Ball will remain in charge of the team for Saturday's Premier League fixture against Manchester United at the Stadium of Light.
The 48-year-old has acted as caretaker-manager for the club's last two matches following the sacking of Paolo Di Canio.
Ball guided the Black Cats to a win over Peterborough United in the Capital One Cup before Saturday's defeat at home to Liverpool in the Premier League.
Sunderland are currently at the bottom of the table with one point from their opening six games.
Former Brighton & Hove Albion boss Gus Poyet is the favourite to be named the next permanent manager at the club.
