Sunderland midfielder Jack Rodwell's trial with Vitesse has collapsed due to what the Dutch side describe as "organisational reasons".
The 26-year-old was offered the chance to earn a contract at the GelreDome, having been informed by his current employers that they want him - and his £70,000-a-week wages - off their books this month.
Rodwell will not be joining Vitesse, though, as the Vitas tweeted on Thursday morning that the trial will no longer go ahead.
Sunderland have offered to rip up the remainder of the England international's contract, but he will remain on the club's payroll until a new team can be found.
Speaking earlier this month, the former Manchester City midfielder claimed that he is still good enough to perform in the top flight.
