Carlos Carvalhal: 'Both managers would have wanted penalties'

Swansea City boss Carlos Carvalhal believes that both he and Sheffield Wednesday counterpart Jos Luhukay would have preferred to settle their FA Cup fifth-round tie on penalties.

Swansea City manager Carlos Carvalhal has claimed that both he and Sheffield Wednesday counterpart Jos Luhukay would have preferred to settle their FA Cup fifth-round tie on penalties.

Both sides played out a goalless draw in Saturday's encounter at Hillsborough, ensuring that the tie will be replayed at the Liberty Stadium.

With Swansea fighting relegation from the Premier League and Wednesday also looking over their shoulders in the Championship, Carvalhal has suggested that a replay is not ideal for either side.

"It's a score nobody wants," the Portuguese told BBC Sport at full time. "I also believe [that's the case] for Sheffield Wednesday - the same one more game.

"Maybe in the future we can think that if the managers and referee agree after the first game we can go to penalties and we can finish the game today.

"I believe if you had asked us and the Sheffield Wednesday manager, we'd have gone to penalties."

Wednesday manager Luhukay also admitted after the match that the prospect of a replay makes the situation "difficult" for his depleted side.
