Ki Sung-Yeung admits selection shock

Swansea City midfielder Ki Sung-Yeung admits that he had no idea Michael Laudrup was planning to play him at centre-back in the League Cup final.

Swansea City defender Ki Sung-Yeung has admitted that his selection in central defence for the League Cup final came as a huge surprise.

Ki was drafted in at centre-back to replace the injured Chico Flores in Sunday's 5-0 win over Bradford City.

The South Korean plies his trade primarily in midfield but was chosen by Swans boss Michael Laudrup ahead of Kyle Bartley and Garry Monk for the Wembley showpiece.

Ki has conceded that he did not know about Laudrup's decision until late on, but has declared himself pleased with his performance in Swansea's maiden trophy win.

He told The Scotsman: "I didn't expect it, but I thought it went okay for me. I haven't played there much before but I was happy to do something for the team.

"The boys played brilliantly and I thought we controlled the game. It was a great day. You don't get many chances as a player to play in front of 82,000 fans. It is the first time we have won a major trophy, it is very meaningful for me, for all the players and for the fans because they always support us well, wherever we play.

"This group of players just gets stronger and it has done that through this cup competition. Everyone is working hard and we have had more belief with every game, beating Liverpool, then Middlesbrough then Chelsea in the semi-finals. We will enjoy this."

The Swans success in the cup marked a first major English trophy win for a Welsh club since 1927.
