Huw Jenkins expecting interest in Garry Monk

Swansea City chairman Huw Jenkins concedes that the club may have to cope with interest in manager Garry Monk following a successful first full season in the job.

Swansea City chairman Huw Jenkins has admitted that the club may have to ward off interest in manager Garry Monk in the future.

Monk has made a promising start to life in management, guiding Swansea to a record points haul and eighth place in the Premier League in his first full season at the helm.

Such success has led Jenkins to declare Monk the greatest manager in the club's history, but the chairman is hopeful that the former defender does not go the same way as Roberto Martinez and Brendan Rodgers, who have both left for traditionally bigger sides in recent years.

"With every appointment you always keep your fingers crossed and hope things work out. But you've got to try and make sure the personality is right at the right time because the club needs certain things at certain times. Garry stepped in last year, finished the season strong for us and he's had a fantastic year," he told BBC Wales.

"He's brought the squad of players together and you can see they've got a good collective motivation and commitment for the football club. He's done all we thought Garry could do - and more. He's done a remarkable job. Garry is new to it and let's hope he spends more than the two years Roberto and Brendan did with us.

"But let's not forget that clubs in the Premier League and around Europe are always looking for young and up-and-coming talent, players and managers. We've got to accept it and perhaps realise we've got to contend with that because of our success."

Talks over a new contract for Monk are already underway ahead of their final match of the Premier League season, which comes against Crystal Palace on Sunday.
