Paul Clement: 'We deserve to be bottom of table'

Swansea City manager Paul Clement delivers a brutally honest assessment of his side's current situation, declaring that they "deserve to be bottom of the table".

Swansea City manager Paul Clement has declared that his side "deserve to be bottom of the table" following their 2-1 defeat at Stoke City this afternoon.

Wilfried Bony put the visitors in the lead with just three minutes on the clock at the bet365 Stadium, only for Xherdan Shaqiri and Mame Biram Diouf to strike back in the space of four minutes just before the break.

Coupled with Crystal Palace's point away at West Bromwich Albion, the result saw the Welsh side fall to the foot of the Premier League table and extend their worrying winless run in the league to seven games.

"The performance kind of sums us up," Clement told Sky Sports News. "At times we played good football, we got off to a really great start, scored with the kind of move we spoke about, and up until they scored their goal we were the better team until that point. Then we gave the ball away in a key area. The goal is a gift.

"The second one is very typical of their style at times - particularly when Peter Crouch plays up front. A long ball, we are a bit deep, and you can't expect to always win the ball in the air against Peter, he's 6'7" and has made a career out of winning those balls.

"At 2-1 though there is a long time to go and I'm really disappointed with the way we continued after that point. We didn't play well and we deserve to be bottom of the table, the way we have been playing. I can't say that we've been unlucky. We're where we are because of the way we've been playing.

"We are alright Monday to Friday, but that's not what it's about, is it? It's about turning out performances on the weekends. All the games we should have done better in are games we arguably should win.

"It's really difficult because you're looking at ways you can turn it around. I can control the lineup, what we do in training, how we communicate that to the players. But clearly that isn't working at the moment and I have to find other ways."

Next up for the Swans is a home encounter with the Baggies next weekend.
