Swindon Town have secured their place in the second round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy Southern Section with a 2-1 win over Newport County.
The home side threatened early on as Aaron O'Connor wrestled his way into the penalty area, but his goalbound shot was deflected wide of the post.
Newport went close again as Robbie Willmott raided into the box down the right and he cut the ball back to Christian Jolley, who could not direct his effort on target.
The visitors began to come into the game as the half wore on and Jake Reeves was unlucky to see his strike from distance smack off the crossbar and bounce clear.
However, on the stroke of half time Swindon took the lead when Andy Williams found Jon Obika in the box and the striker converted from close range.
In the second half, Obika came close to doubling his tally when he managed to turn his man inside the box, but he crashed his shot into the side-netting.
Swindon got their second goal of the evening when Williams drove into the box himself and lifted an effort over Joe Day into the net.
Newport got a lifeline in the 81st minute when Yan Klukowski scored a tap in from close range after O'Connor had caused problems in the box to set up a tense finish.
Connor Waldon hit the post late on for the visitors as they failed to kill off the game, and that presented a chance for Newport in the dying seconds as O'Connor had his headed cleared off the line, and Swindon held out for the win.
