World Cup 2022: Wales vs. England head-to-head record

Ahead of Tuesday's World Cup clash between Wales an England, Sports Mole looks at the head-to-head record between the two sides.

With a place in the knockout stages up for grabs, Wales and England go head to head at the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium in the final round of Group B matches on Tuesday.

Following a 64-year absence from the World Cup, Wales' return to the global showpiece has been far from impressive as they face the risk of early elimination after picking up one point from their opening two matches.

Robert Page's men fought back from behind to snatch a 1-1 draw against USA in their group opener on November 21, but were left stunned by Iran, who claimed a 2-0 victory when the sides squared off last Friday.

After being under the cosh for most of the game, the Dragons finally succumbed to pressure from the Iranians as Roozbeh Cheshmi and Ramin Razaeian netted stoppage-time goals after Wayne Hennessey had received a red card for a dangerous tackle on Porto striker Mehdi Taremi.

England, who opened their campaign with a 6-2 victory over Iran, head into Tuesday needing at least a draw to secure a second consecutive knockout-stage appearance as they currently lead the way in Group B with four points from a possible six.

Off the back of a goalless draw against USA in their second round of group fixtures, Gareth Southgate will hope for a much better performance from his side, who appeared to receive boos from some of the England contingent after being outplayed by the Stars and Stripes.

However, the Three Lions will fancy their chances of getting the job done and even coming out victorious in another highly-anticipated battle of the Brits as they boast an excellent run of results over Wales.

England are unbeaten in 89 of their last 103 matches against Wales, claiming 21 draws and a staggering 68 wins, including a 2-1 victory in the first encounter between the sides in January 1879.

Bottom of the Group B standings and needing a win to keep their slender hopes alive, Wales must end a run of six consecutive defeats against England and secure what will be just their 15th win in the history of this fixture.

Their most recent victory over the Three Lions came in the British Home Championship back in May 1984, when Mark Hughes struck in the 17th minute to sink Southgate's side at the Racecourse Ground.

However, Page's side head into Tuesday without a World Cup-related victory against England, losing all but one of their previous six encounters while holding out for a 1-1 draw in Group 5 back in 1973.

Wales are also yet to defeat the Three Lions in any major tournament after losing each of the five UEFA European Championship qualification meetings between the sides since November 1966.
