Former Premier League official Dermot Gallagher says that Watford striker Troy Deeney deserved his straight red card for a tackle on Huddersfield Town's Collin Quaner.

Former Premier League official Dermot Gallagher has insisted that Watford forward Troy Deeney has "no grounds for argument" after being sent off against Huddersfield Town.

During the first half of Huddersfield's 4-1 win at Vicarage Road, Deeney was given a red card for lunging into a challenge with Collin Quaner, leading to his second dismissal of the season.

The incident has divided opinion, but Gallagher has claimed that it was an easy decision for the referee.

Gallagher told Sky Sports News: "This deserved a red. Seriously I'm not joking and defending the referee here! He has just thrown himself into the challenge and I think actually he even expects a red card for this.

"The speed of it, he's out of control and there is no concern for the player that he has made the tackle on. He has no grounds for argument there."

Deeney now faces a fourth-match ban, meaning that the 29-year-old will not be free to return until Watford's FA Cup encounter with Bristol City on January 6.
