West Bromwich Albion announce Carlos Corberan as head coach

Championship club West Bromwich Albion announce that Carlos Corberan has been appointed as the club's new head coach.

West Bromwich Albion have confirmed that Carlos Corberan has been appointed as the club's new head coach.

Despite being one of the favourites for promotion, the Baggies currently sit in the Championship relegation zone having accumulated just 14 points from 16 matches.

Steve Bruce was initially sacked after a poor start to the campaign, while caretaker boss Richard Beale contributed three points from as many games in charge.

However, back-to-back defeats to Bristol City and Millwall effectively forced the hand of the club's hierarchy with regards to making a permanent appointment as soon as possible.

That has led to Corberan being provided with a faster-than-anticipated return to English football on a two-and-a-half-year contract.

Speaking on the appointment, chief executive Ron Gourlay said: "Carlos is a coach of the highest quality, and I am delighted to welcome him to the club. Carlos was in our thoughts from the very beginning of the recruitment process and our admiration of his qualities only grew on meeting him.

"He is a confident, enthusiastic and detailed coach, who is as determined as I am to bring success to The Hawthorns. We share a belief that performances and results will improve under his guidance, and that significant time remains in the season for us to mount a serious assault on the Championship league table.

Corberan moves to West Brom having only departed Huddersfield Town in the summer after two years in charge at the John Smith's Stadium.

After an inconsistent first campaign, the Terriers were one of the surprise packages of the EFL during 2021-22, finishing in third spot in the Championship table before losing in the playoff final to Nottingham Forest.

The 39-year-old's efforts in Yorkshire earned him an opportunity to become head coach of Olympiacos in August, only for that stint in Greece to last just 11 matches.

Although Corberan recorded just three defeats, the Spaniard posted just two wins, and was sacked after just seven weeks.

Corberan recently acknowledged in an interview with Sky Sports News that he was ready to take on 'his next project', with West Brom winning the race for a highly-regarded head coach who may have interested other clubs in the same division. body check tags ::
