David Moyes: 'Defeat to Wigan Athletic not surprising'

West Ham United manager David Moyes attempts to play down the magnitude of his side's 2-0 loss at Wigan Athletic, pointing out that he was without a number of regulars.

David Moyes has insisted that "people should not be that surprised" by Wigan Athletic's victory over his West Ham United side in the FA Cup.

One of the biggest upsets of fourth-round weekend took place at the DW Stadium on Saturday afternoon, as the League One outfit picked up a 2-0 win over their Premier League opponents.

Moyes was without a number of first-team players for the trip to the North-West, however, with Andy Carroll, Marko Arnautovic, Mark Noble and Manuel Lanzini all missing out, while Arthur Masuaku was sent off early in the second half.

The Scotsman has therefore attempted to play down the magnitude of the loss, telling reporters after the match: "People shouldn't be that surprised because if you look at the team we played, I don't think our team is necessarily a Premier League team.

"I think we had a scattering of Premier League players. Then we had young players, who're on their way to trying to become good footballers. Maybe some of them, in time, will go on to be top Premier League players, but at this point in time it's not the case."

Masuaku has been handed a six-game ban by the Football Association for spitting at Nick Powell during his side's defeat.
