West Ham United hosted Southampton in their Premier League match this afternoon.

Maya Yoshida gave the Saints an early lead, when he headed in Steven Davis's free kick.

Matt Jarvis eqaulised for the hosts, and they scored a second through Carlton Cole three minutes later.

In the second half Kevin Nolan added a third goal to seal a fourth-successive win for the Hammers.

Was the result fair?

Southampton may well have dominated the possession, but they rarely troubled Adrian in the West Ham goal. They only managed five attempts on target as their forward players struggled to get in behind a resolute home defence. West Ham will be delighted with the way they fought back after conceding an early goal, and they made the most of the opportunities that came their way.

West Ham's performance

Having not conceded in their last four Premier League matches, the manner in which West Ham allowed an unmarked Yoshida to head in early on will not have pleased manager Sam Allardyce. They recovered from the setback well to take advantage of slack Southampton defending and were good value for their fourth-successive league win.

Southampton's performance

The Saints started the game strongly and it looked as if Mauricio Pochettino's men would go on to claim the three points, but after allowing Jarvis in to equalise, they lost their way. They may have completely dominated the possession and did have 25 shots on goal, however, very few of those efforts caused the home side any problems.

Sports Mole's man of the match

Kevin Nolan: West Ham may not have seen much of the ball, but when they did Nolan was at the heart of everything good. His fine pass to pick out Jarvis for the first goal got his side back on level terms and his acrobatic volley late on sealed the three points. It is no coincidence that his good form has helped West Ham into the top half of the table, and he must surely be the frontrunner for the Premier League Player of the Month award for scoring five goals in his last three games.

Biggest gaffe

Adam Lallana came close to scoring with the score at 2-1, as he was through on goal, but under pressure from the defence he dragged a shot wide of the post. It proved to be a crucial miss, as within a minute Nolan found the back of the net to put the game beyond any doubt. It wasn't the easiest chance to score, but fine margins can separate victory from defeat in the Premier League.

Referee's performance

Mark Clattenburg did not have too many big decisions to make this afternoon, as the football did all the talking. He handed out just one booking, which was a deserved yellow card to Lallana in the closing stages for a pull on Mark Noble's shirt.

What next?

West Ham: The Hammers visit Everton in the Premier League next Saturday.

Southampton: Southampton are also in action next Saturday when they will face a tough match at home against Liverpool.
