Former sports minister Richard Caborn says that West Ham United's successful bid to secure the Olympic Stadium is a "mistake".

Former sports minister Richard Caborn has labelled West Ham United's capture of the Olympic Stadium as a "mistake".

The Premier League outfit were confirmed as the historic ground's anchor tenants on a 99-year lease.

The former Championship club will pay £15m for the lease, while around £150m is expected to be spent on redevelopment plans in time for the 2016-17 season.

"This is the biggest mistake of the Olympics and lessons should be learned from this," The Morning Star quotes Caborn as saying. "West Ham are basically getting a stadium costing more than £600m for just £15m and a small amount in annual rent (£2m)."

"I do welcome the fact that the future of the stadium has finally been secured, but we should also realise that the public sector is picking up the tab. Time and again mistakes are made with Olympic Stadiums and the lessons should be learned for any future similar projects."

West Ham have been bidding for the stadium for three years.
