Matt Jarvis aims to be a bit "more clever" in the box after failing to go down for a penalty, despite being fouled during West Ham's defeat to Arsenal.

West Ham United's Matt Jarvis has admitted that he may need to be a bit more "clever" in the box after deciding against diving for a penalty, despite being fouled.

The 27-year-old opened the scoring against Arsenal at the Emirates, but his side eventually succumbed to a 3-1 defeat on Tuesday night.

Before his first-half goal, Jarvis was clipped in the box by Bacary Sagna, but opted to stay on his feet as opposed to falling to ground and appealing for a penalty.

"We had quite a few chances even before we scored," Jarvis told the club's official website. "The manager was disappointed as I could have had a penalty too.

"I don't know if it was a foul. I don't know if I had gone down whether it would have been a penalty or if I had whether I'd have been booked. Maybe I should learn from that and be a bit more clever."

West Ham are currently 11th in the Premier League table, while Arsenal have returned to fourth spot.
