A long-standing record was beaten on the track in Portugal on a busy weekend at home and beyond.

A fortnight on from equalling Michael Schumacher’s Formula One record of 91 race wins, Britain’s Lewis Hamilton went out on his own with victory number 92 at the Portuguese Grand Prix.

The Mercedes driver already had the most pole positions in the sport’s history and is set to join Schumacher on seven drivers’ titles later this season.

At Twickenham there was no England match against the Barbarians on Sunday after a breach of the bubble by the visitors, but 24 hours earlier the famous stadium saw Exeter Chiefs wrap up a distinguished double by defeating Wasps 19-13 in the Gallagher Premiership final.

In cycling Tao Geoghegan Hart became the latest Briton to land a Grand Tour win, taking the Giro d’Italia’s maglia rosa in Milan to follow in Chris Froome’s 2018 footsteps.

Wales’ Alun Wyn Jones equalled All Black great Richie McCaw by winning his 148th Test cap in the international clash against France, but he was on the wrong end of a losing cause in a 38-21 defeat.

The Premier League provided its usual share of intrigue. Harry Maguire’s eventful season continued as he found himself at the centre of a penalty debate in the goalless draw against Chelsea, defending champions Liverpool needed a winner from new boy Diogo Jota to see off Sheffield United and there was a hat-trick for Leeds striker Patrick Bamford.

Over the border in Scotland, veteran striker Jermain Defoe scored his 300th club goal in Rangers’ 2-0 defeat of Livingston.

Phil Neville’s Lionesses, meanwhile, were unable to fulfil their planned fixture against Germany due to a case of coronavirus in their backroom team and had to settle for Friday’s internal warm-up match at St George’s Park.

Tiger Woods’ hopes of defending his Zozo Championship and limbering up for the Masters in style came unstuck in California as he tied for 70th at the same Sherwood County Club course that he used to host his own annual event at.
