Massa's Ferrari teammate Fernando Alonso could come only 10th despite being quick all weekend.
Force India's Paul di Resta ended fourth in the qualifying on Saturday, but he was given a five-place penalty for an unscheduled gearbox change.
Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher ended up in an encouraging fifth place, while his Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg was seventh.
Alonso currently leads the championship by 24 points from 12 races.
