McLaren announce that Jenson Button will race for the team in Formula 1 next season.

McLaren have announced that Jenson Button will continue to race for the team in Formula 1 next year.

The 35-year-old Englishman will drive for the British constructors for a seventh season in 2016 after agreeing to take up the second year of his contract.

McLaren chairman and chief executive officer Ron Dennis told the team's website that Button's experience would be key going forward.

"I am extremely pleased," said Dennis. "Jenson is the most experienced driver currently racing in Formula 1, and next season he is due to become only the third driver (after Rubens Barrichello and Michael Schumacher) in Formula 1 history to pass the milestone of 300 grands prix.

"But, although that wealth of experience makes him a massively valuable asset to our team, hugely expert in all aspects of the 21st-century Formula 1 driver's craft, he is also supremely fit and as super-fast as ever."

Button won the world championship in 2009 with Brawn GP before moving to McLaren the following season. He achieved top-five finishes in his first three seasons with the team, but in recent years has dropped off the pace.

This season, Button has managed just six points due to McLaren's troubles with new engine supplier Honda and lies 18th in the drivers' standings.

"Okay, granted, this year has not been an easy one for us, but we know what we need to do to improve things and, in collaboration with Honda, we will work extremely hard over the next weeks and months in order to make sure that 2016 will be a much better season than 2015 has been," said Button.

Next season will be Button's 17th in the sport after he first entered in 2000 with the BMW Williams team.
