McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton has apologised to Kamui Kobayashi for their collision during yesterday’s Belgian Grand Prix.
The 2008 world champion retired from the race after his left-rear tyre was clipped when overtaking the Japanese driver on lap 13, sending the British driver into a crash barrier.
"After watching the replay, I realize it was my fault today 100%. I didn't give Kobayashi enough room though I thought in was past (sic)," Hamilton commented via Twitter.
"Apologies to Kamui and to my team. The team deserves better from me."
The collision has added to a growing list of incidents involving Hamilton this season, including a collision with Williams driver Pastor Maldonado at the Monaco Grand Prix and one with teammate Jenson Button at the Canadian Grand Prix in June.
"I knew perfectly well he was faster than me so had no reason to fight with him," Kobayashi said after the race.
"After he overtook me it was not my intention to get my position back, so I stayed on my line and didn't expect him to move over."
Hamilton now trails championship leader and Belgian GP winner Sebastian Vettel by 113 points.
