Sauber boss Monisha Kaltenborn has backed plans for smaller Formula 1 teams to receive a handout in order to boost their hopes of staying on the grid.

The Swiss constructor, along with Force India and Lotus, were rumoured to be threatening a boycott of last weekend's United States Grand Prix over the perilous financial health of the sport after both Marussia and Caterham entered administration in recent weeks.

An agreement could be reached before next Sunday's Brazilian Grand Prix, providing cash injections to smaller teams on the grid, and Sauber's principal believes that the proposal is a positive step for F1.

Kaltenborn is quoted by The Independent as saying: "I believe the figures we have been discussing amongst us are at a decent level and can allow us to be in the sport decently.

"That's all we say, the rest is up to us. We're not asking for a solution whereby dreams come true and we have a comfortable, cushy life.

"No, all we say is you have to be allowed, from the income the sport generates, to have a decent living so you're not struggling every month, every year to make ends meet."

Sauber are currently 10th in the constructors' standings, having failed to score a point so far this season.
