Lee Westwood says that Phil Mickelson's final round of 66 at the Open Championship was "exceptional".

Lee Westwood has remained upbeat despite a disappointing final round at the Open Championship, which saw him finish four shots behind winner Phil Mickelson.

The Englishman started the day two shots clear of the field but a four-over 75 at Muirfield means that his wait for a maiden Major title goes on.

However, Westwood gave credit to Mickelson for his final round of 66, which he described as "exceptional".

"Phil must have played really well - five under par is a good round of golf this afternoon," the 40-year-old told BBC Sport.

"To birdie four out of the last six round here, on any day, is good going. But to do it today on a breezy day with the flags blowing is exceptional."

Westwood went on to praise the fans for the support he received at Muirfield, stating that he did not buckle under the weight of pressure.

"I've been relaxed all week - I'm normally relaxed," he added. "It's my favourite tournament of the year so I tend to enjoy it.

"The crowd were great and I had lots of support out there, even when the result was done. It's always the same at the Open Championship - they are very knowledgeable fans."

Westwood finished one-over-par for the tournament, which saw him finish tied for third with Ian Poulter and Adam Scott.
