The 22-year-old finished the round at 13-under-par on a score of 65, while Danish pro Bjorn didn't take long to match the Northern Irishman with the clubhouse target.
"I just kept picking up birdies along the way and it puts me in a great position," McIlroy told Sky Sports News. "I feel a lot more confident than I did in Abu Dhabi ."
Round-one leader Rafael Cabrera-Bello dropped down to third with 12-under, while Martin Kaymer finished the session on 67, which included a hole in one on the seventh.
