Australia team refusing to move into Athletes' Village ahead of Rio Games

Australia's chef de mission for the 2016 Olympic Games describes the full extent of the poor conditions waiting to greet hopefuls to the Athletes' Village in Rio.

The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) has claimed that the Athletes' Village is in such a bad state that it is refusing to move its own competitors in.

With just two weeks to go until the Rio Games are due to open, accommodation for those taking part in the event is still deemed uninhabitable due to significant plumbing and electrical concerns.

AOC chef de mission Kitty Chiller confirmed that Australia's travelling party had yet to move into the Village, having intended to do so on Sunday as planned.

"For over a week now AOC staff have been working long hours to get our section of the Village ready for our athletes," she said in a statement.

"Problems include blocked toilets, leaking pipes, exposed wiring, darkened stairwells where no lighting has been installed and dirty floors in need of a massive clean.

"In operations areas water has come through the ceiling resulting in large puddles on the floor around cabling and wiring."

Chiller also revealed that the Great Britain and New Zealand contingents had experienced similar issues, while Rio organisers have sent in large teams of cleaners and repair staff to rectify the concerns.
