President of the German FA Wolfgang Niersbach has revealed that the World Cup trophy suffered some minor damage during celebrations in Brazil.

Germany clinched their fourth world title with a 1-0 victory over Argentina at the Maracana last Sunday.

Members of the team celebrated with the trophy long into the early hours of the morning, during which a part of the much-coveted piece of silverware was chipped off.

"At one point, a small piece of our World Cup trophy was chipped off, but do not worry, we have specialists on the case who can fix it," Niersbach told Die Welt.

"We have investigated persistently who it was that damaged the trophy, but the investigation was concluded without a result."

The trophy, which was first introduced in 1974, is said to be worth around £8m.
