Merseyside Police have confirmed that they are investigating an alleged incident of coin-throwing at Anfield during last night's derby between Liverpool and Everton.
Liverpool striker Luis Suarez is said to have been targeted by fans in the Everton end while he lined up to take a corner, and later gave referee Martin Atkinson a coin that had landed on the pitch.
A statement from Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm we are investigating following reports of some missiles being thrown during the Liverpool vs. Everton football match this evening, Tuesday, January 28.
"The incidents took place during the first half of the game when a number of coins and other small objects are believed to have been thrown from the stands onto the playing area.
"Officers are requesting CCTV from the stadium and will review any footage as part of inquiries to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incidents."
Liverpool went on to thrash their Merseyside opponents 4-0 with goals from Suarez and Steven Gerrard and a brace from Daniel Sturridge.
