A 140-metre roof truss has been lifted into place as part of the expansion works on the Main Stand at Liverpool's Anfield ground.

The 650-tonne construction, which will stand on two 28m-high towers either side of the Main Stand, was due to be erected yesterday, but the work was delayed by high winds.

The club confirmed that the operation to install the truss got underway at 6am, and shared an update on Twitter:

Chief executive Ian Ayre told the club's website: "This is an historic milestone in Anfield's history as the stadium transformation continues to take shape. We embarked on this significant expansion project just seven months ago and today we're lifting the Main Stand's new truss and marking another incredible chapter in the club's history.

"We are proud to be able to call Anfield our spiritual home and this is a redevelopment that gives us a fantastic opportunity to ensure that all the rich history and traditions that make this stadium so special can continue for many years to come."

The works are due to be completed during the 2016-17 season, and will add an additional 8,500 seats to Anfield's capacity.
