Alan Shearer has revealed that Newcastle United did not consult with him ahead of their decision to rebrand the bar that was named after him.

The former Magpies striker's name was removed from the eatery earlier this week, shortly after he publicly criticised the club over its decision to appoint Joe Kinnear as director of football.

"There was no consultation, I was simply informed by email of their decision to change the name. It was not a question of me agreeing or disagreeing," The Sun quotes Shearer as saying.

"It is their ground and it is up to the owners what they do with it. It won't stop me from buying my season tickets and supporting the team."

Newcastle have dismissed the notion that Shearer's comments influenced their decision to rename the establishment, and have pledged to raise money for his charity for disabled children at the grand opening.

Shearer's Bar will be known as Nine when it reopens.
