The FA will use the 'Rooney Rule' to decide on the next England manager when current boss Gareth Southgate leaves the post.

The FA will use the 'Rooney Rule' to decide on the next England manager when current boss Gareth Southgate leaves the post.

The announcement from chief executive Martin Glenn is part of a raft of changes to be implemented at the governing body this year alongside a £57m boost in funding.

The 'Rooney Rule' is a policy adopted in the NFL that ensures that black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) candidates are considered for management roles, and it is hoped that the changes will reflect the modern football landscape.

"The commitment to the 'Rooney Rule' is about bringing to life our ambition to make the people that run football and manage football, they should look - in mine and the FA's view - more like the people that play football today," Glenn told Sky Sports News.

"We are going to be public about this. We will be held to account both in terms of our diversity targets, but also on this. It's FA policy not just the individual choice of any chief executive.

"[The changes] illustrate both how committed the FA is to becoming a more inclusive and diverse organisation, and how much it contributes to English football."

Southgate took the Three Lions job in November 2016 following England's Euro 2016 campaign in France.
