Gary Lineker has hit back at criticism from former The Sun editor Kelvin Mackenzie, who was heavily criticised for his newspaper's coverage of the 1989 Hillsborough disaster.
The 68-year-old wrote in his recent column for the tabloid newspaper that Lineker will quit his job with the BBC if it loses its rights to show Premier League highlights.
The retired footballer became anchor of the show following the departure of Des Lynam in 1995 and has been the main presenter ever since.
In response to MacKenzie's column, Lineker tweeted: "I've never 'let it be known' I'd leave the BBC if we lost MOTD. Kelvin Mackenzie telling lies. Who'd have thought?"
The former England star received plenty of support from Hillsborough campaigners after posting his tweet.
