Tom Maynard's family: 'Inquest findings don't define our son'

Tom Maynard's family say that the findings from their son's inquest, which revealed that the cricketer was highly intoxicated at the time of his death, does not define him.

The family of Surrey batsman Tom Maynard have insisted that their son will not be remembered for the choices he made that led to his tragic death last June.

The 23-year-old was electrocuted by a live rail before getting hit by a tube train on the District Line last summer following an incident that involved police stopping the cricketer on suspicion of drink-driving in Wimbledon.

An inquest heard today that Maynard had high levels of alcohol and drugs in his system at the time of his death.

"The results of the inquest do not define our son," said the statement, according to BBC Sport. "The fact that so very many people thought the world of him is what defines him as a person.

"The only people who would judge Tom on the findings of the inquest are people who didn't know him. He made choices that night that tragically cost him his life but his devastated family and friends will love and miss him unconditionally always. He was a very special person and his death leaves a huge hole in all our lives."

The promising cricketer was the son of former England and Glamorgan batsman Matthew Maynard.
