Former Manchester United defender Gordon McQueen has admitted that he never allowed his battle with cancer to get him down.
The 61-year-old was diagnosed with cancer of the larynx almost two years ago when a Sky Sports viewer prompted the Scotsman to see a doctor due to his husky voice.
"I was lucky," the Daily Mail quotes McQueen as saying. "I knew a specialist and they caught the cancer early. It used to be a death sentence but not now. I was never frightened.
"A lot of other people feared for me. My kids were worried. The only way to tackle it is head on. Be positive. I never allowed it to get me down. I am not making light of it. I was never desperately ill."
McQueen currently undergoes check-ups every six weeks.
