Sports Minister Hugh Robertson insists that the London Marathon should go ahead, despite two explosions killing at least three people at the Boston Marathon.

Sports Minister Hugh Robertson believes that the London Marathon should go ahead following the two explosions that occurred towards the finish line of the Boston Marathon.

At least three people have been killed and over 100 injured after two blasts went off around three hours after the winner crossed the finish line yesterday.

While security measures are due to be reviewed ahead of Sunday's event in London, Robertson has insisted that it should not be cancelled.

"I'm both horrified and appalled [by events in Boston] and all our thoughts are with those affected," Robertson told BBC Radio 4.

When asked if the London Marathon should go ahead, Robertson said: "Yes, I do. These are balance of judgements and we are absolutely confident we can keep the event safe and secure. This is one of those instances where the best way to show solidarity with Boston is to continue and send a very clear message to those responsible that we won't be blown off course.

"It is difficult [to make the whole of the 26-mile route secure] but we've lived with the threat of terrorism throughout my adult life. We do have some of the very best security services in the world and they have experience of doing this and will do what's necessary."

Local reports in Boston have claimed that an eight-year-old boy is one of the fatalities.
