Shrewsbury Town apply to become the first English side with an all-seater stadium to introduce safe standing at their Greenhous Meadow home.

League One club Shrewsbury Town are hoping to become the first English side with an all-seater stadium to introduce safe standing facilities.

The Shrews have applied to have special rail seats installed in one stand at their Greenhous Meadow home before the end of the upcoming 2017-18 campaign.

For the plans to go ahead approval must be given by the Sports Ground Safety Authority, potentially bringing an end to the two-decade ban on standing in all-seater stadia in the English Football League.

"There's a clear demand from our fans for an area where they can stand safely," Supporters Parliament joint-chair Roger Groves is quoted as saying by BBC Sport.

"We see that at every game with several hundred choosing to stand at their seats, which is not altogether safe. Rail seats will ensure that nobody falls over no matter how wildly they celebrate a goal and, by having a dedicated standing area, we believe that the overall atmosphere in the stadium will also be enhanced.

"For all those fans who prefer to sit, it will additionally mean that there will be no standing fans in their part of the ground spoiling their view."

Shrewsbury, who finished 18th in the League One standings last season, moved to an all-seater stadium 10 years ago.
