Durham Police have confirmed that Sunderland winger Adam Johnson has been charged with three offences of alleged sexual activity with a child under 16, and one offence of grooming.
This afternoon, the 27-year-old arrived at Peterlee Police Station with his solicitor to answer bail over allegations that he had sex with a girl aged 15.
Johnson was arrested on March 2 over the claims and was suspended by his Premier League club for just over two weeks.
The top-flight star, whose girlfriend Stacey Flounders gave birth to the couple's daughter earlier this year, was previously given extended bail for five weeks by the police.
After today's charges were read out, Johnson was ordered to appear before Peterlee Magistrates' Court on May 20.
