David Miliband stands down as vice-chairman of Sunderland over the appointment of Paolo Di Canio as head coach.

Labour MP David Miliband has resigned from his role as vice-chairman of Sunderland over the appointment of Paolo Di Canio as manager.

Di Canio signed a two-and-a-half year contract to replace Martin O'Neill as Sunderland manager earlier tonight.

Miliband confirmed in a short statement that he has stepped down from his place on the board at the club due to Di Canio's "past political statements".

A statement on his personal website said: "I wish Sunderland AFC all success in the future.

"It is a great institution that does a huge amount for the North East and I wish the team very well over the next vital seven games.

"However, in the light of the new manager's past political statements, I think it right to step down."

Di Canio was fined and suspended during his playing career for making a one-arm celebratory salute towards Lazio fans in 2005.

The Black Cats are one point above the Premier League relegation zone following yesterday's 1-0 defeat to Manchester United.
