USA captain Clint Dempsey receives a standing ovation from audience members during the Late Show with David Letterman in New York.

USA captain Clint Dempsey received a standing ovation when he appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman in New York City on Wednesday evening.

The Seattle Sounders forward, who previously played for Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham, was invited onto the show following USA's World Cup campaign in Brazil.

Jurgen Klinsmann's side failed to reach the quarter-finals following a 2-1 defeat to Belgium, but their campaign to the last-16 round captured the attention of millions of sports fans in the US.

While entering the stage to chat with Letterman, Dempsey was met with a standing ovation and audience members chanting "USA!".

The 31-year-old and USA goalkeeper Tim Howard received a phone call from president Barack Obama last week, congratulating the team on their efforts in South America.
