The director of the 2014 Sochi Games' opening ceremony, Konstantin Ernst, plays down the glitch involving one of the Olympic rings.

The director of the 2014 Sochi Games' opening ceremony, Konstantin Ernst, has played down the malfunction of one of the Olympic rings.

One of five giant snowflakes failed to open up to form an Olympic ring during the ceremony, leaving the symbol incomplete.

"Zen Buddhists have a saying that if you have the perfectly polished ball, leave a nick in it so you can understand just how perfectly it is polished," BBC Sport quotes Ernst as saying.

"No normal person would get distracted by one snowflake that did not open from the story that is being told over two and-a-half hours."

The Winter Olympics in Sochi is said to have cost £30bn and is the most expensive in history.
