Castleford Tigers beat St Helens 25-24 in Thursday evening's Super League clash at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle as Ben Roberts secures the win with a late drop goal.

Ben Roberts kicked a dramatic late drop goal to give Castleford Tigers a 25-24 win over St Helens in Thursday evening's Super League clash at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle.

The hosts drew first blood when Justin Carney scored in the corner after just five minutes, although Luke Gale's conversion flew just wide.

St Helens equalised five minutes later when Travis Burns's grubber was touched down by Luke Walsh, Mark Percival then converting to put the visitors ahead.

Alex Walmsley put St Helens further ahead on the quarter-hour mark, before Denny Solomona put the home side within distance again in the 27th minute.

The first half ended with the visitors 18-10 up after Joe Greenwood crashed over and Percival converted, but Castleford were ahead again by the hour mark thanks to tries from Jake Webster and Matt Cook.

Just five minutes elapsed before Shannon McDonnell edged St Helens in front again, before a lengthy break in play that saw Adam Swift stretchered off after sustaining a head injury.

Gale's penalty from 40 metres three minutes before time saw the game delicately poised at 24-24, and in a dramatic finale Roberts kicked a drop goal as time expired to gift his side the narrowest of wins.
